Getting a little philosophical with this one from the circus guy. That name might sound a little familiar he started the Barnum and Bailey Circus. Apparently according to wikipedia he also gets credit for the 'Their's a sucker born every minute' quote, without any proof to back it up.
One of the things that makes humans so ridiculous is our obsessions. These obsessions though can cut us pretty bad. Money is something that is great to have. Not going to spit some baloney about how much better it is to be poor, it's not. However being at peace, and being happy with what you have is better. You need to be able to master that money though marshal it to buy you the items that are difficult or unsavory to produce or procure yourself.
When money is mastering you it can happen when your rich or poor. When it becomes an all consuming fire of worrying about bills, and credit card debt, and collection calls. It, and by it I mean the bank, owns you. Your it's slave and it will eat up all your time working you like a dog with worry on top of the amount of time that you spend trying to earn your way out of the mess.
You want Money to be your servant, ready at your beck and call to get the groceries, fill up the tank, or ready to step in if the car breaks down. Personally the way I believe that you make that switch is a budget. Without a budget you are hoping things turn out, with a budget you know if they will - and sometimes more importantly - will not work out. If things are not going to work out it's time to get serious about emancipation. You don't want to be that wage slave forever.
