Low Wage Living - Episode 9 - Month 2

So we survived the first month. That is a start and there were a couple of things that could take us out. Accidents or Acts of god. The first month we had to pound pavement and get a job, at this point pretty much anything will do though we have priorities.

  • Jobs that have a promotional path. It's fine to start at the bottom but you don't want to end there.
  • Jobs that do not require a lot of physical labor. Getting a workout is all fine and dandy but HAVING to work out can cause injuries. That is a quick way to be taken out.
  • Jobs that cover some of your expenses. Training, food, phone. If military service is an option it is stupidly amazing with the caveat -as long as you don't die, get PTSD, or permanently maimed. Aim for the Air Force and some sort of aircraft maintenance. Jobs that translate into civilian life well and where your more valuable to the military alive. Truck drivers, at least until the computers take over.

Hopefully some of the better jobs will open up but for right now anything will do. It can take 2 weeks after an interview for the job to start for a fast food joint. Typically these jobs are high turn over so it's fast. A good job can be several months (and several interviews) from interview to start date.

First off we have to pay back the interest on that loan we took the first month to pay our room mates.  Unfortunately we don't get our pay check at the start of the month so as soon as we get paid, at the end of month two for minimum wage we are looking at:
pay check of 13,926.38 (after taxes) / 12 = 1160.53
Month 1 Budget =800
Month 1 interest at 20% =13
Month 2 Budget = 800

We are left 452.47 in the hole.

We are wage slaving it up right now, pay check to pay check. Now the fun thing is that this month, after we got paid we have $$ like actual dollars instead of just credit. And the interesting thing about that is Yard Sales!

Anything that is new you can get around 50% off if you wait for a good sale.

Anything that is used you can get around 75% off the new price, if they want more than this haggle, also ask your questions as a general rule of thumb. (See Episode 8)

So a lot of this month is going to depend on what we scrounge up at those sales, and how many sales are near you.  These typically pop up on Saturday mornings when the weather is reasonable nice in the spring. We want to hit up the yard sales and the Good will Stores, flea markets for our items first and then turn to online or retail for the rest. Now even though we have a 160 dollars Wiggle room in the budget we have a priority list.

Transportation - A bike
   - Bike Lock, Air pump

Storage - Backpacks
  - More than one is ok, but we want one. This increases our carrying capacity significantly.

Sitting - Fold-up chairs
- Right now your room looks pretty bare, unless you have a friend with a truck your stuck with what you can carry.  One chair is all you need at this point. Right now your getting your life in order. You don't need to have friends over - you can go over to their place.

A Broom or other cleaning supplies - doubt they will be selling bleach, but hey who knows.

Hobbies that serve a purpose - More on this latter
